Illness, chronic pain, and hard diagnoses don’t just affect the body. They tend to bring up bigger questions too, about meaning, mortality, and what actually matters, whether or not those questions have ever come up for you before.
Health Support Services offers spiritual counseling for patients who want space to work through those questions alongside their medical care. Sessions are open to people of any faith background, or none at all, and led with the same respect and compassion as the rest of your care here.
This isn’t tied to one religious tradition. Some patients want prayer or scripture woven in. Others want to talk through doubt, or don’t consider themselves religious at all and just want to think through what’s happening to them. Sessions follow your lead, not a script.
Sessions are conversation-based and unhurried. What comes up depends on you, sometimes a specific worry, sometimes something harder to name. If you want prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection as part of a session, that’s available. If you’d rather just talk, that’s fine too.
Spiritual treatment is nota substitute for your medical treatment, this complements your medical care. If what you’re carrying looks more like clinical depression, or anxiety that requires ongoing treatment, our mental health and medication management team is exactly the right fit for that and we can ensure communication between the two.
The first session is mostly about getting to know what’s going on for you right now, medically, emotionally, and anything else weighing on you. From there, we figure out how often to meet. Some patients come for a handful of sessions around a specific event. Others check in regularly as part of ongoing care.
No. This is open to anyone, regardless of faith background or whether you have one.
Not exactly. If you need ongoing clinical treatment for a mental health condition, our Mental Health & Medication Management service is the better fit, and we can help connect the two if you’d like both.
Yes. Many patients build it into their ongoing care, especially while managing a chronic condition.
